Order of the Onyx
Treatment
Creator/Writer: Raymond D. Sweet
Type of Programming/Genre: Urban/African-American Slice of life youth and family sitcom
Target Audience: African-American youth and young adults
Logline: See what happens when Thurgood's family becomes dysfunctional. Uncle Joe has competition for his annual party for the Ancestors.
Synopsis: Order of the Onyx/Ankh is a family oriented sitcom that looks at a slice of life of its teenage characters as they face the challenges of youthfulness and coming of age. As an added bonus the family is endowed with magical powers given to them from their African-American ancestors. However, there are some things that even magic can't fix or prevent as each episode reveals a mortal struggle that is played out through its teenage and sometimes adult characters.
The show will deal with issues such as drug abuse, gang violence, bullying, dysfunctional families, pride through heritage, gratefulness, pursuit of happiness, child rearing, education, health, wealth and other issues that families and teenagers face. Additionally, through the use of the ancestors we have a built in lesson in African-American and African history. This would satisfy the programming requirements of most stations to have educational shows and diverse audience without being preachy.
The cast is predominately African-American, because the show targets African-American families and teens. Shows like The Game, Everybody Hates Chris and Meet the Browns have an African-American audience, but they deal primarily with adult like themes and are not suited for younger audiences. Here is a look at the main characters:
Marquan Swedin – Leading male of the series. He is as smart as he is handsome. But he succumbs to the same pressures that every other teenager faces.
Thurgood Dubois – Descendant of W. E. B. Dubois is also a leading older male in his mid 20's early 30's. He is a spiffy dresser and is well groomed all the time. He has a perfect body and perfect shape, but not that tall. Even in a crisis. He is a single bachelor that everyone wants.
Thelunda Swedin – The ingenue of the cast is young, intelligent, classy, but a total goof ball. She is fun to be around, but in a sophisticated way. She too like her brother Marquan are faced with challenges that every teenager deals with.
Uncle Joe Swedin – He is the family's patriarch and male voice of reason. He guides the family and youth into making sound decisions.
Ms. Ann Swedin – She is the family matriarch and female voice of reason.
Cost: The cost of the series would be fairly inexpensive. Shows like Harry Potter, Sabrina the Teenaged Witch, Twilight Series and Vampire Diaries have already set the stage that supports an audience for mystical backdrops. Shows such as Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns and House of Payne and The Game is test for there being an audience for Family Comedies and Dramas with predominately African-American casts. This means there would not be a major need to attach a big name for the series to find an audience. The proper build up and marketing strategy will ensure a first night audience and a well written show will guarantee return visits. In terms of priority and expense costs here is a list for production:
1. Writers – 4
2. Post production (Visual Efx) – The effects are uncomplicated, but for it to look professional we
will have to employ the help of a mid-range expert.
3. Post Production (editing)
4. Post Production (sound editing)
5. Production (Crew, Cinematographer, Production Designer, etc.)
6. Casts
7. Pre Production (Production Designer, Location Scouting, Scenic)
8. Marketing
In terms of marketing the show could do a national search looking for the ingenue or leading male. We can explore the use of YouTube and facebook for getting the future audience involved in the show. Each episode could invite a new YouTuber or facebooker on to play a role in the show instead of the traditional casting that is done.
In summary, Order of the Onyx/Ankh, a hilarious show with mystical powers to entertain and educate an African-American audience can be the financial flagship of any channel. The format has been proven with Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the target audience has been identified through shows like Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns and Twilight Series. Yet the uniqueness of the project is that there has never been a show with a magical/mystical backdrop and a predominately African- American cast. Exploiting the uses of social networking sites gives us an inexpensive marketing outlet and access to new talent. Additionally, because of the reuse of the scenery and lack of a huge name attachment cost of the show will be minimal, which allows for a better return on investment.
